Zoetis-Sponsored Therapy Dog Receives 2013 American Humane Association Hero Dog Award

Zoetis recognizes that heroes come in many shapes and sizes – sometimes even on four legs. That’s why Zoetis is a proud supporter of the annual American Humane Association (AHA) “American Hero Dog” awards. The public cast more than a million votes to determine the eight finalists from a group of 141 dogs nominated for being extraordinary. Elle, a pit bull from North Carolina, took the top honors. She represented the Zoetis-sponsored Therapy Dog category.

“All of us applaud Elle and the other seven finalists for their contribution to the health, happiness and welfare of their human families – and of their communities,” said J. Michael McFarland, DVM, DABVP and group director of Companion Animal Veterinary Operations for Zoetis.

Elle’s accomplishments include teaching children about dog safety and founding a therapy dog reading program called “Tail Wagging Tales,” to help children enjoy books and improve their reading skills. Elle regularly visits an elementary school, a middle school, and a retirement home.  As “America’s Hero Dog,” Elle’s charity partner, Hand in Paw, will receive a $6,500 donation to further their work.

Zoetis was proud to work with the AHA on this event that underlines the human-animal bond. “The AHA appreciates and supports the important work veterinarians do for the health and wellness of our companion animals,” Dr. McFarland added.
